As other structural elements, passenger boarding bridges require the verification of their behaviour under service conditions. The objective of the load tests is to verify the mechanical components and structural strength of the tunnels and cabins of two passenger boarding bridges (SPBB) to the port of Southampton.
The test consists on applying load, by means of flexible water tanks, inside the walkways and reading displacements and tensions in the most critical points of the structure.
The instrumentation consisted of using linear displacement sensors and strain gauges.
Due to a localised phenomenon and within the exhaustive quality controls of the boarding bridges contruction company, the effects of the elevator going up and down were also checked. A test was designed where the profiles of this structure would be instrumented while cyclic movements up and down the elevator were executed.
The instrumentation consisted of using convergencemeters and linear displacement sensors.
